As conflicts erupt around the world, a fractured Congress attempts to rally support for historic global challenges.

With congressional support for Ukraine dwindling, the United States is once again striving to impose its global leadership.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. As the Senate finished its business for the year, Sen. Michael Bennet stepped to the floor of the practically empty chamber and made a late-night plea to Congress to redouble its support for Ukraine, saying, "Understand the stakes at this moment."

It was the third time in recent months that the Colorado Democrat delayed unrelated legislation in an attempt to persuade legislators to support tens of billions of dollars in armament and economic aid for Ukraine. During a nearly hour-long emotional speech, he urged senators to see the nearly 2-year-old conflict as a defining clash between authoritarianism and democracy, and he implored them to consider what it means "to be fighting on that freezing front line and not knowing whether we're going to come through with the ammunition."

Nonetheless, Congress went on break for the holidays and is not anticipated to return for another two weeks, despite the fact that Ukraine's current aid is practically depleted. The Biden administration intends to deliver one more aid package before the new year, but it will be the last unless Congress appropriates additional funds.

With congressional support dwindling and conflicts and turmoil threatening global security, the United States is once again fighting to impose its place in the globe. Under the influence of Donald Trump, the former president who is now the Republican Party's front-runner, GOP lawmakers have been increasingly sceptical of US participation abroad, particularly in Ukraine.

Traditional allies Britain and France have urged Western nations to maintain their strong backing, but Russia's President Vladimir Putin is emboldened and gathering resources for a new offensive as the war enters its third year.
