Nikki Haley was the target of a swatting attempt last month

According to Reuters, an unknown person swatted Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley at her South Carolina home in December.

Haley, who is running against former President Donald Trump, was not present at her house on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, when an unknown guy summoned authorities on December 30.

The caller claimed he shot his fiancée while at Haley's house and threatened to hurt himself.

The former United Nations ambassador's son was not there when the prank call was made, and her husband, Michael, is currently on a year-long deployment in Africa with the South Carolina Army National Guard.

According to Reuters, Haley communicated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), her team's chief of security, and South Carolina state police.

An FBI officer in the Palmetto State informed Kiawah Island's director of public safety, Craig Harris, and other law enforcement agencies that they were following the hoax dial and intended to include a "threat assessment" regarding the incident.

Swatting entails prank-calling emergency personnel to report a criminal danger in the aim of eliciting a big response from officers.

There has been an increase in "swatting" occurrences against institutions and political personalities.

Two weeks ago, emergency services were dispatched when a 911 caller falsely reported a fire in the White House. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene's home was swatted on Christmas Day, the eighth time this has happened.

Republican politicians, Senator Tommy Tuberville and Senator Rick Scott, sponsored legislation to modify federal criminal hoax provisions and inflict stiffer penalties for swatting.
