US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Monday that he will fly to Paris on Saturday to attend the reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was destroyed by fire more than five years ago, in his first foreign trip since winning the election.
Over five years ago, a fire seriously destroyed the landmark edifice. This is Trump's first international trip since his electoral triumph. The Gothic masterpiece, one of the French capital's most popular and frequented landmarks, will reopen to tourists and Catholics later this week.
Major renovation efforts have returned the 12th-century cathedral, its spire, rib vaulting, flying buttresses, stained-glass windows, and carved stone gargoyles to its former splendour, with the white stone and gold ornamentation shining brighter than ever. Trump, who won the election on November 5 and is scheduled to take office on January 20, hailed French President Emmanuel Macron's government in a post on his social-media platform Truth Social on Monday.
"President Emmanuel Macron has done an excellent job of restoring Notre Dame to its former beauty and beyond. "It will be a very special day for everyone," he added.
